Edition avec en frontispice du tome premier un portrait de Béranger en noir, gravé sur bois d'après Charlet. Reliure de l'époque demi chagrin rouge, dos à nerfs avec titres, tomaison et fleurons dorés. +++++++ Edition des chansons de Pierre-Jean de Béranger (1780-1857) avec les textes mais sans les partitions de musique. Après des débuts de bohème, Béranger connaitra le succès tardif avec le genre qui devait l'immortaliser : en 1805, il sort son recueil La Clé du Caveau qui sera republiée chaque année et qui connait vite un grand succès populaire avec des chansons comme Le Sénateur, Le Petit Homme gris, et surtout Le Roi d'Yvetot. A la restauration en 1815, Béranger renouvelle la chanson dont il fait une arme politique attaquant le régime, célébrant les gloires de la République et de l'Empire et devenant la voix du peuple livrant une oeuvre de poète pamphlétaire considérable. Entre 1821 et 1828, il sera condamné deux fois. Ces condamnations ne font que rendre son nom plus populaire et l'amende est même acquittée par souscription en 1828. Après la révolution de 1830, sa plume s'oriente surtout vers des sujets philosophiques et humanitaires. Fatigué et souffrant, il se retire en juin 1830 à Bagneux, dans un petit pavillon. Il y meurt pauvre et le gouvernement impérial paie même les frais de ses funérailles - Très bon état reliure et intérieur très frais sur beau papier blanc, Bel exemplaire.

Die sehr fein gestochenen und in kräftigen Abzügen vorhandenen Tafeln wohl in Stahlstichradierung sind zwar von mehr oder weniger etablierten und anerkannten französischen Künstlern, wirken künstlerisch, sujetmässig und stilistisch jedoch recht biedermeierlich-beschaulich und tendenziell romantisch; sie erinnern wenn schon eher an Gustave Doré und seine Bibelillustrationen als an Grandville, Paul Gavarni oder Honoré Daumier mit ihren gesellschaftskritischen Arbeiten. L?inspiration populaire, libérale et patriotique des ses oeuvres lui valut, en revanche, une rapide popularité. Ses chansons, refrains légers ou tendres, morceaux d?épopée napoléonienne ou satires anticléricales, parfois véritables pamphlets politiques, écrites en une langue claire et facile, bâties sur des rythmes simples et variés, pénétrèrent dans les campagnes comme dans les grands salons de la bourgeoisie libérale. Béranger, devenu une puissance respectée et redoutée, vécut du produit des ses oeuvres, refusant tout honneur et toute dignité, l?Académie comme la députation.? (Grd. Alle Radikalen und Liberalen, alle Kirchenhasser und Pfaffenfresser fanden in ihm die Seele der Nation wieder, die Ideen der Liebe, der Freiheit, des Fortschritts, der Menscheit, in sangbaren und trinklustigen Melodien. Ernstere Kritiker, wie Sainte-Beuve und Brunetière, haben sich indes von seinem halbpolitischen Tages- und Modeerfolg nicht blenden lassen und die Lorbeerkränze, die ihm ehedem so verschwenderisch gespendet wurden, nach mancher Seite hin zerpflückt. [.] Wie er sich selbst gelegentlich den ?Dichter der Kneipen?, den ?Dichter der Wirtshäuser und schlechten Häuser? nennt, so sind seine weiblichen Ideale die liederlichen Grisetten und die sittenlosen Weiber, die selbst als Grossmütter noch lüstern von ihren Jugendabenteuern träumen. Das alles ist ihm gesunde Sinnlichkeit und Lebenslust. In einem gewissen treuherzigen, volksmässigen Tone besingt er die grossstädtische Unsittlichkeit nach allen Seiten, als ob sich all das von selbst verstände und der Himmel auf Erden wäre. [.] Nur in Bezug auf die Volksgunst war er empfindlich und eifersüchtig. Während er sich in seine demokratische Anspruchslosigkeit einpuppte, erlebte er denn auch den Triumph, dass [.] seine Chansons, in immer neuen Auflagen, auch mit frivolen und lüsternen Illustrationen, ganz Frankreich überschwemmten und alle die Ideale dem Gespött preisgaben, für welche sie einst in Poesie und Prosa eingestanden waren.? Die Darstellung Bérangers durch Baumgartner gemahnt in gewisser Weise zwar an François Villon und Heinrich ?Henri? Heine; doch dürften diese grossen ?Sänger? in ihrer Genialität und Nachhaltigkeit den zwar zeittypischen, aber wohl auch mehr zeitgeistigen Barden Béranger an Bedeutungstiefe bei weitem übertreffen. Wie auch immer: seine Chansons dokumentieren bestens einen Aspekt der französischen Kultur während der nach-napoleonischen Restauration der Bourbonenherrschaft in Frankreich. ??
