First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. The Observer's Book of Basic Aircraft - Civil - Observer's Book No. 38. Printer's code: 587.367 which I believe indicates that the book was printed in March 1967. The book was not reprinted but carried two states of the jacket - this copy being the second state with mention of The Observer's Book of Aircraft 'next edition 1968' on the back panel. The book was superseded by 'The Observer's Basic Civil Aircraft Directory' in 1974. Fully illustrated with a monochrome photograph of each aircraft type and silhouettes by Dennis Punnett. ***Near fine in light-grey textured boards with dark-red titles to the spine and front board. The covers are clean and unmarked, with just some light browning to the top edges. No creases or tears. Corners sharp. No bumps. Page block edges nice and clean. No reading lean to the binding. Internally the book is also near fine - extremely clean with no inscriptions or annotations. Printed by lithography on matt-finish paper. No marks. No creases. No cracking to the binding. Spine tight. ***In a very good colour illustrated dustwrapper, which has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price but with a publisher's 7/- net reprice sticker over the printed price. The dustwrapper is largely complete with just slight loss at the top of the spine, and with some rubbing and creasing at the extremities, commensurate with age and handling. Small nicks and closed tears to the top edges, but no serious chips. There is a light stain at the bottom outer corner of the back panel, a small light stain to the centre of the spine, and small stain at the bottom of the front foldover flap (please see scans). No browning to the spine - just light fading to the red titles. ***147mm x 95mm. 272 pages including a detailed four-page Index of Aircraft Types at the back of the book. ***'The most compact reference source to the entire spectrum of today's civil aircraft for pocket or bookshelf, this volume of "The Observer's Basic Book of Aircraft" illustrates and describes all the most important airliners, executive transports, feederliners, agricultural and utility aircraft, sports and touring light planes, and commercial helicopters. For the first time in a book of this size comparison silhouette drawings are provided to enable differing versions of one basic aircraft design to be readily compared, and in addition to well over 400 individual drawings and 135 photographs, this volume offers a tremendous wealth of information concerning the characteristics and history of each type and, in the case of airliners, lists the principal operators currently employing the individual aircraft type.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***A first printing of the true first edition, published in 1967, in very nice collectable condition, in the original dustwrapper. Whilst the Observer's books from this period are not uncommon, many of the books were handled by children and consequently show a lot of wear and tear. They can prove to be quite hard to track down now in nice condition in the original dustwrapper. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
