Hardcover. Condition: Fair. No Jacket. 3rd Edition. NOTES ON THE STATE OF VIRGINIA WITH AN APPENDIX BY THOMAS JEFFERSON 1801 3RD AMERICAN EDITION. Some books are historical documents; this is one of them. This book has been preserved over the years and repaired, inexpertly, as well. It is now more than 200 years old and still in one piece. Please find: “Notes on the State of Virginia with an Appendix” by Thomas Jefferson. In addition to the Notes about Virginia which Jefferson prepared in response to questions from a French diplomat living in the United States, there is a series of important appendices, including: Appendix I- additional commentary regarding Jefferson’s responses to the queries of the French diplomat by Mr. Charles Thompson, Secretary of Congress; Appendix II- a “Draught of a Fundamental Constitution for the Commonwealth of Virginia”; Appendix III- An Act for establishing Religious Freedom passed by the Assembly of Virginia; Appendix IV- Relative to the Murder of Logan’s family (an Indian family murdered by colonial forces during the Revolutionary War). This copy lacks the Frontispiece portrait of Jefferson and the fold-out map of the State. Additionally, as you will see in the photos, the boards have been reconnected to the text block with maroon library tape on the outside and beige tape on the interior hinges. Condition: The best that could be said is that the book is in fair condition. The boards are bumped and worn at the corners. Inside, there is a former owner’s bookplate on the front endpaper and some other inked writing opposite it. As might be expected, the pages are toned and show some water staining and the odd occurrence of slight soiling and foxing, none of which prevents reading the text. Some of the sheaths of pages are slightly ajar and/or shaken but the book is now holding together well. This book is not ex-library. Language: ENG.
