Library stamp to front free endpaper (Bid. Maj. SFX), and inscr. to blank front endpage: 'Bibl. S. F. X.' and (in old hand) 'S.J. St Swithin's Chapel / Gillmoss'. St Swithin's Chapel, Gillmoss, near Croxteth Park in Lancashire, was originally founded in 1410; the recusant chaplaincy was run by Benedictines 1757, and later by Jesuits until 1887, when it was transferred to the secular clergy. John Lingard (1771-1851), Roman Catholic priest and historian. This new translation of the Gospels was intended to show 'the impracticability of drawing from the narratives of the four Evangelists, without the aid of oral testimony or tradition' (Gillow).
