hardcover. Condition: Very Good. In the Native State by Tom Stoppard is a richly layered radio play that intertwines past and present as it explores memory, colonial history, and the power of art. The story follows a modern researcher uncovering letters and recordings that reveal the relationship between a British poet and her Indian portrait painter during the final years of the Raj. Stoppard blends wit, emotional nuance, and sharp cultural insight as the narrative shifts between eras, gradually exposing long-buried tensions and connections. A compelling work for fans of Stoppardâs intelligent drama and those interested in British-Indian history.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. The First UK Printing published by Faber and Faber, London in 1991. The BOOK is in near Fine condition with just some slight toning to the text-block and a tiny bump to the lower spine. 8vo., pale blue publisher's boards, lettered in white to spine together with publisher's device; in the unclipped pictorial wrapper ('£9.99 net' to the front flap) designed by Tania Willis. The WRAPPER also very near Fine, with a couple of tiny age related markings. The wrapper is protected in a removable Mylar cover. This copy signed (without dedication) by Tom Stoppard to the front free endpaper. Stoppard's 1991 play for Radio was initially broadcast on 20 April. Directed by John Tydeman, it starred Felicity Kendal, Saeed Jaffrey and Peggy Ashcroft, marking her last dramatic performance before she passed away in the June of that same year. The play was later adapted into a full-length stage adaptation which Stoppard renamed 'Indian Ink'. Set in India just before independence, and in England several years later, the plot follows protagonist Flora Crewe as she travels to India in the 1930s for her health. There, she has her portrait painted by a local artist, Nirad, and passes away shortly afterwards. Stoppard then shifts the time period to almost fifty years later, when the artist's son, Anish, visits Flora's sister in London to learn more about Flora's relationship with his father. A lovely copy and most uncommon to find with such attributes. (Warner C6 a). More images available on request. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact. Signed by Author(s).

Hardcover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: As New. 1st Edition. The only SIGNED copy of the true first hardback edition of this superb play on the internet; it was written for radio and it differs considerably to the rewritten stage version, where it was retitled 'Indian Ink'. This is the first printing of the hardback, and it is as near perfect as it could be for the collector. Tom Stoppard has signed this on the title page. The unclipped jacket is also perfect, and is protected. Moving, fascinating, allusive, it explores the cultural and political legacies of India and England. One of this extraordinary writer's very greatest plays. Signed by Author(s).
