Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. This is a first edition of Mutiny: Highland Regiments in Revolt 1743-1804, by the Canadian journalist John Prebble (1915-2001). The Highland regiments of Scotland were first raised to police their own land, then expanded in imperial wars. The Gaelic people of the 18th century, who were 3% of the population, supplied the Crown with 65 regiments. Soldiers were rarely willing--they were recruited by threat or sold by their chiefs. They were not allowed to speak their language or maintain their dress; their families were often evicted from their land. The result was mutinies, and this is an account of them, from the revolt of the Black Watch in 1743 to the mutiny of the Fencibles in 1804. 542 pages, with illustrations. There is quite a lot of shelfwear to the dust jacket and there is damage to both corners of the cover (from a puppy). There is a stain on page 309. Otherwise perfect.
