If you've read the latter - and you really must - then Mrs Pooter's comments are very amusing, giving a sense of a slight irritation with her husband and in particular his rather odd sense of humour but her love for him also comes through clearly. A very clever riposte to Charles Pooter's diary, with the added delight that unbeknownst to him, she regularly read his diary. Keith Waterhouse CBE (1929 2009) was a British novelist and humorist (not necessarily in that order) and newspaper columnist and the writer of many television series. He was a noted arbiter of newspaper style and journalistic writing. Mr. Waterhouse fought long and high-spirited crusades to highlight what he perceived to be a decline in the standards of modern English; for example, he founded the Association for the Abolition of the Aberrant Apostrophe, whose members attempt to stem the tide of such solecisms as "potatoe's" and "pound's of apple's and orange's" in greengrocers' shops.
