Hardcover. Condition: Fair. Fourth Edition. Undated (early 20th Century) 4th edition hardcover (stated), without dustjacket, in decorative stamped boards with bright gilt lettering to front board which is rubbed to the top and bottom edge, rubbed and bumped to the corners. Decorative spine with bright gilt lettering is bumped and rubbed ends with some damage to each, and one torn page. About 2/3 of the decorative pre-printed pages have been filled with 295 carefully cut crests and monograms, of which 165 are military - mainly of British and Indian Army regiments - some of which are from Lincoln's pre-printed sheets, but many taken directly from correspondence. There are also 11 complete cards with military crests which have been pasted on blank facing pages. Although the book has no previous ownership writing, the space reserved for the personal monogram of the owner has been filled with a neatly cut example of the Scottish Mitchell family crest. William S Lincoln was one of the originators of stamp collecting and of particular interest is a contemporary catalogue bound into the back of the book which lists albums, stamps and sheets of monograms and crests for sale along with a photograph of their shop in London. A unique item. Carefully packaged and posted within 48 hours from our wee bookshop in Scotland.; Color Illustrations.

Yellow moiré silk endpapers. 27pp. of neatly pasted crests, monograms, & addresses, many identified in ink ms. Half black morocco by C. Asprey, brown cloth boards, raised bands, spine ruled in gilt; extremities rubbed, corners bumped, inner hinges split but sound. An album with neatly cut and pasted crests, monograms, and addresses, mostly removed from envelopes or letterheads. The pages are often arranged by theme, and include the crests of the Oxford Colleges, Cambridge Colleges, Military regiments and many aristocratic women. The Late Prince Albert's crest is the first to appear in the album on the leading f.e.p. verso, followed on the first text leaf by the rest of the Royal family including the Queen and all of her children: the Princess Royal (Victoria), Prince of Wales (Edward), Princess Alice, Prince Alfred, Princess Helena, Princess Louise, Prince Leopold, and Princess Beatrice. Crest albums became popular in the mid-nineteenth century, and while some crests would have been collected via letters the collector had received, there was also a market in them. This album is particularly impressive given the number of crests and monograms that have their owner identified, as many volumes like this include only the cut-out designs and not the names.
