Add to basketStapled at upper left corner. Condition: Very good. 63, [1] pages. Illustrations. Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) is a robotic space probe mission to Mars launched by NASA on November 26, 2011, which successfully landed Curiosity, a Mars rover, in Gale Crater on August 6, 2012. The overall objectives include investigating Mars' habitability, studying its climate and geology, and collecting data for a human mission to Mars. The rover carries a variety of scientific instruments designed by an international team. Contents include Media Services Information; Quick Facts; Mars at a Glance: Mars Science Laboratory Investigations; Mission Overview; Comparing Two Mars Rover Projects; Spacecraft; Mars Science Laboratory Landing Site; Recent, Current and Upcoming Missions; Mars Science: A Story of Changes; Historical Mars Missions; and Program/Project Management. For several reasons, a different landing system was chosen for MSL compared to previous Mars landers and rovers. Curiosity was considered too heavy to use the airbag landing system as used on the Mars Pathfinder and Mars Exploration Rovers. The MSL engineers came up with a novel alternative solution: the sky crane. The sky crane system lowered the rover with a 25 ft tether to a soft landingâ"wheels downâ"on the surface of Mars. This system consists of a bridle lowering the rover on three nylon tethers and an electrical cable carrying information and power between the descent stage and rover. As the support and data cables unreeled, the rover's six motorized wheels snapped into position. At roughly 25 ft below the descent stage the sky crane system slowed to a halt and the rover touched down. After the rover touched down, it waited two seconds to confirm that it was on solid ground by detecting the weight on the wheels and fired several pyros (small explosive devices) activating cable cutters on the bridle and umbilical cords to free itself from the descent stage. The descent stage then flew away to a crash landing 2,100 ft away. The sky crane concept had never been used in missions before. Xerox-style reproduction. Assumed to be one of only a few produced for media representatives.

Add to basketCondition: Fine. First Edition. First Edition. 17 x 24 inches (sheet size) with approx 2 inch white margins. One of only twelve copies produced. Printed on archival paper using a large format ink jet printer with pigmented archival inks. Colors bright and vibrant! Between 2009 and 2014 Mark Davis of MDTV produced two documentaries about the Curiosity Rover Mission (aka Mars Science Laboratory). One for National Geographic (MARTIAN MEGA ROVER, aired August 2012) ) and one for The Discovery Channel (RED PLANET ROVER, aired December 2014). While MDTV was gathering primary source material at Caltech's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), a poster project was commissioned by Project Scientist John Grotzinger of Caltech/JPL at the suggestion of JPL engineer Adam Steltzner. Steltzner envisioned the posters as motivational posters to be displayed in the areas where the rovers were being built, much like WWII war effort posters. MDTV agreed to take on the task of design and production. While the project was not finished in time to fulfill their intended purpose, these posters remain a vibrant and very visual representation of the scientists at work, and add to the visual record of the space program. Three different poster designs were created and produced - one titled "Curiosity, Live from MARS", a conceptual piece highlighting the scientists and the Mars rover. The second "MARS Science Laboratory", shows the delivery of the rover to the surface. And the third, "Insatiable Curiosity", showing the rover on the surface of Mars. The edition was designed by artist Leighton Kelly and printed by Rob Day of Zeno Design on archival paper using a large format ink jet printer with pigmented archival inks. Of the original twelves copies of each poster design printed, three sets (one of each design) were given to the JPL Scientist who commissioned the project, two sets to other people at JPL, one set was kept by MDTV, one set by the artist, and one single poster was sold to an engineer at JPL. Kuenzig Books purchased the entire remaining production run from MDTV - four sets plus two additional posters and one triplet. We have (as of this writing) one remaining complete set and a few individual posters. They will not be reprinted. NOTE: Since these were envisioned strictly as internal motivational posters, they were not signed or otherwise marked as a limited edition on the posters.

MDTV agreed to take on the task of design and production. In the end, the posters were not finished until after the rover landed on Mars, so before printing MDTV revised the text to make them "evergreen". Even so, the posters remain a vibrant and very visual representation of the scientists at work, and add to the visual record of the space program.
