Now, in this illustrated and updated edition, readers will once again be able to discover the genius of Marc Chagall, who, at the age of 93, continues to enlighten and enliven the world with his scenes of floating lovers, bouquets of flowers, circus performers, flying cows, and religious motifs. Starting with Chagall's boyhood in Vitebsk ~ the small Russian town featured in many of his works ~ Howard Greenfeld tells the life story of the 20th century master. Discouraged by his family from a career in art in the beginning, rejected later by the established art schools whose traditional aesthetic views did not encompass his personal style of painting, he often lived in poverty through war and revolution. But Chagall persevered. His accomplishments are numerous and varied. Among them: the Jerusalem Windows ~ twelve splendid stained~glass windows in the synagogue of the Hadassah Medical Center near Jerusalem, the magnificent ceiling of the Paris Opera House, the two huge murals in the Metropolitan Opera House in New York, the sets and costumes for operas and ballets ~ including The Magic Flute ~ illustrations for the Bible and La Fontaine's Fables, ceramics, sculptures, etchings, andof course ~ all the brilliantly colorful paintings with their extraordinary imagery. Howard Greenfeld's biography covers the significant periods in the artist's life. Personally acquainted with Chagall, the author has sensitively told the story of a towering genius of our time.
