The quotations selected by the author concern types and printing, are from the past and the present, and are in 16 languages (translations are provided). Hermann Zapf is a noted type designer and he himself originally devised many of the type faces used here. Other faces were taken from the fonts of the Stempel foundry in Frankfurt/Main and historic faces came from that foundry's archives. The author has also designed the page layouts, choosing for this manual a horizontal format. The purpose of the manual is "to show the myriad possibilities of the expressiveness and beauty of type, whether individually or in massed text, by the use of purely typographic means." The original English edition of this work was limited to 1000 copies. In making it available to a larger audience, Paul Standard's comment, printed in the original, becomes more pertinent still: "In a world grown noisy and clamorous, reading remains among the very few quiet pleasures left to man. The present work hopes to be considered an attempt to bring a body of critical and expository comment to the widest circle of readers%u2014comment upon every contributory element in bookmaking and printing generally, upon the design of letter forms and their disposition on the page. The very sight of so many different languages on these successive pages is itself a humanizing experience, suggesting as it does a striving for unity while preserving linguistic diversity by means of the printer's art." This "critical and expository comment" has been culled from a wide international range of writers, including both masters of literature and masters of the art of printing. The main body of text consists of 100 quotations (printed on rectos only) relating to the printing arts ("exercises in typographic design"), set in sixteen languages using various types from the D. Stempel foundry, printed in black and red, with each leaf numbered in blind. With an index of types used for alphabets and texts. One of only a few copies specially bound thus for presentation to VIPs, and quite uncommon. Without the rear pocket and booklet. Laid in is a black-and-white photograph of Zapf by the noted New York artist and photographer A. Burton Carnes. A cheerful Zapf is holding the lever of a handpress, drink glass in hand. One of 1000 copies of this title printed by Heinrich Egenolf; signed by Zapf on the colophon page. With the small and elegant calligraphic book label of John and Jean Michael. A beautiful production overall, and a near fine copy; one leaf shows some creases, possibly a paper production defect; slipcase lightly rubbed. Signed by Author(s).

Edition limited to 1000 copies, oblong folio, consisting of 2 bifolia (title page, preface, and table of contents, plus 100 typographic leaves with quotations from the past and present on types and printing in 16 different languages selected and designed by Hermann Zapf and printed by Heinrich Egenolf; plain embossed outer wrapper with title printed in red on spine, and contained in the original clamshell box with the title in gilt on spine. The box is a little worn, otherwise generally fine throughout. This is a presentation copy from Zapf, inscribed by him in German on the inside of the front wrapper to Walter Howe, Director of the Lakeside Press's Department of Design and Topography, and a Fellow of the Society for Typographic Arts in Chicago of which Hermann Zapf was also a member. Laid in are the original printed complimentary presentation slip from Zapf, the 47-page pamphlet, Texte und Ubersetzungenin Deutcher Sprach, the publisher's printed announcement leaf for a forthcoming English translation supplement to the Manuale, and a printed New Year's greeting from Hermann and Gudrun Zapf for the year 1966. The Manuale Typographicum was set in 16 languages with the types of D. Stempel Ag at Frankfurt am Main and historic faces taken from that foundry's archives. Zapf drew 100 examples from the creative genius of such artists as Gill, Rogers, Baskerville, and Bodoni, and quotations from the works of such literary minds as Cicero, Dickens, Hugo, and Huxley.
