In a short preface, entitled "Mannerism Origins", Brown states: "Let us begin with Dana and Alexandra who walked with me through mannerism in all the subtleties contained and all the grandeurs offered. For what this reactionary movement has spun I admire and embrace. For Rome as it is. As it inspired." Additionally inscribed by the artist to gallery owners Inger and Anders Tornberg on the first blank leaf: "Inger + Anders / James / 1995". Brown exhibited at Anders Tornberg Gallery on three occasions between 1985 and 1991.
