Avec Charcot, qui s'était penché sur l'importance et les conséquences de l'hérédité chez les patients atteints de troubles mentaux, la pratique de tracer et de commenter les antécédents familiaux devint courante. Féré développe quant à lui le concept de "famille névropathique", dont l'expression apparaît la première fois dans un article des Archives de neurologie en 1884. Chez lui, l'hérédité devient une explication tant de l'organisation sociale que de la responsabilité humaine ; il entrevoit même la possibilité, eugénique, d'intervenir chirurgicalement afin d'éviter la reproduction des constitutions maladives (L'instinct sexuel, évolution et dissolution, Alcan, 1899). Néanmoins, il démontre dans le présent Traitement des aliénés dans les familles que la meilleure prophylaxie est d'ordre médico-social et qu'elle a lieu au sein de la famille, de l'école et de l'armée, de même que pour la syphilis et la tuberculose.
