First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Bruce Roberts, et al. (photographers) (illustrator). 1st Edition. Published by Globe Pequot as a trade edition in hardcover and soft cover, here the book gets the Easton Press treatment. Full navy leather binding with raised bands, lots of gilt lettering and decoration, a photographic pastedown on the front cover, heavily gilded edges, silk marker, and moiré silk (or bengaline) endpapers. This encyclopedia is in three sections: 1) the history of lighthouses; 2) an alphabetical guide to all things lighthouse related; 3) an alphabetical listing of 175 lighthouses with descriptions and many color photographs. There's an Introduction by the author and, at rear, an appendix of lighthouse resources and an index. Basically a fine copy apart from the fact that the gilding of the bottom edges did not end perfectly well. Looks fine when the book is closed, but the very edges of some pages seem stuck together. They are very easily separated, in some cases leaving a very thin line of wear on the very edge of the leaf. A beautifully bound and handsome book for the lighthouse enthusiast. It is a hefty tome, so some extra shipping fee may be required. See also my listings for "Lighthouses" introduced by Michael Vogel, and "Lighthouses of North America" by Barry Pickthall. They make a wonderful threesome.
