Émile Meyerson, né en 1859 à Varsovie et mort en 193…2 à Paris, fut un philosophe des sciences d'origine polonaise, actif en France au début du XXe siècle, où il s'imposa comme un penseur majeur de l'épistémologie. Ce premier tome explore la notion d'explication scientifique, en analysant comment les théories scientifiques visent une compréhension causale absolue, souvent illusoire, par assimilation des phénomènes nouveaux aux schémas préexistants. Meyerson y critique les limites de la causalité newtonienne et anticipe des débats sur la relativité einsteinienne, soulignant le rôle persistant de la subjectivité dans la construction rationnelle du savoir. L'ouvrage s'inscrit dans le contexte intellectuel d'après-guerre, marqué par le déclin du positivisme et l'essor d'une philosophie plus critique de la science. Papier bruni.
