The return volley in a small local drama. The Stranger in Reading, by John Man, offered a variety of strong opinions on all manner of topics concerning the town, and consequentially stirred up a significant amount of offense. From the preface of this work: "Really, the pamphlet, which I have scarcely skimmed, is a production which may point out some abuses and appropriate correctives, but is at the same time such a sinner against style, fact, and principle, that nothing but its local influence seems to justify the honour [of a response]. Such works must perish."
