Old engraved armorial bookplate and small modern bookplate to front pastedown. Occasional light foxing, heavier to prelims. Leather to front hinge beginning to split but binding firm. Ex Forbes library with bookplate and perf on title pages. The 20 plates in first part and 4 in second part are not stamped. Contents quite clean with no foxing. Original front wrapper signed by a Thomas Ludlow in Athens 1880. Second part published in 1855.

Provenance: with the engraved architectural bookplate of A. Berard on the front paste-down. First edition. The history of the church of St. Front of Périgueux has given rise to numerous discussions between archæologists and architects as to its origins. Félix de Verneihl, as here, claims "that St. Front was a copy of St. Mark's (Venice); Quicherat, that it was copied from the church of the Holy Apostles of Constantinople. M. Brutails is of opinion that if St. Front reveals an imitation of Oriental art, the construction differs altogether from Byzantine methods. The dates 984-1047, often given for the erection of St. Front, he considers too early; he thinks that the present church of St. Front was built about 1120-1173, in imitation of a foreign monument by a native local school of architecture which erected the other domed buildings in the south-west of France" (Catholic Encyclopedia online).

Les deux ouvrages comportent un envoi autographe signé de l'auteur : le premier à Eugène Massoubre (qui a signé son nom au titre), rédacteur en chef du journal périgourdin l'Écho de Vésone, le second sans destinataire mentionné. L'ouvrage a été enrichi d'une petite aquarelle collée au premier contreplat, représentant le château de Chambéry, daté de juillet 52, en dessous l'ex-libris de Patrick Esclafer de la Rode.
