Soft cover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. This is the 'Left Book Club Edition' with the words 'Not for sale to the public' on the orange cloth front cover. / In this the author argued that there was no point in Labour compromising on its socialist principles in the belief that this would achieve electoral success. He wrote: "I find that the proposition often reduces itself to this that if the Labour Party would drop its socialism and adopt a Liberal platform, many Liberals would be pleased to support it. I have heard it said more than once that if Labour would only drop its policy of nationalisation everyone would be pleased, and it would soon obtain a majority. I am convinced it would be fatal for the Labour Party. This account of the early days and growth of the Labour party by one of its prime minister's. One of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before. / This is a 1st edition paperback in good condition-the cloth of the cover is a little marked. (287 pages).

Some darkening to the top edge of the page block. Internally also very good with no inscriptions, just an original owner's ink stamp 'Cosker' and a tiny bookseller's label 'The Bookromm, 10 East Street, Okehampton Tel 2848' on the front free endpaper. The pages are clean, with just very light foxing to the preliminary and last pages. Top corner of first few pages slightly creased but no tears. The paper stock has not really tanned over the decades - still quite clean and white. No dustwrapper as issued. ***287 pages. 185mm x 123mm. ***Contents: Chapter I. Introductory, II. Historical Retrospect, III. Trade Union and Co-operative Movements, IV. Constitution, V. Labour Party Method, VI. Socialist Objective, VII. Short Programme, VIII. Foreign Policy, IX. The Commonwealth and the Empire, X. Labour and Defence, XI. Prospect. ***'Some thirty years ago, when I was a young barrister just down from Oxford, I engaged in various forms of social work in East London. The condition of the people in that area as I saw them at close quarters led me to study their causes and to reconsider the assumptions of the social class to which I belonged. I became an enthusiastic convert to Socialism. I joined the Fabian Society and the Independent Labour Party and became a member of my trade union, the National Union of Clerks. For many years I worked as a rank and file member of the movement, taking my share of the work of branch activities and propaganda meetings at street corners. I shared the hopes and disappointments incidental to Socialist work in what was then a very backward area. [Quote taken from the Introductory chapter] ***''Clement Richard Attlee, 1st Earl Attlee, KG, OM, CH, PC, FRS (3 Jan 1883 - 8 Oct 1967) was a British politician who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1945 to 1951 and Leader of the Labour Party from 1935 to 1955. He was Deputy Prime Minister during the wartime coalition government under Winston Churchill, and served twice as Leader of the Opposition from 1935 to 1940 and from 1951 to 1955.' [Wiki] ***A first edition published by Victor Gollancz in a Left Book Club edition in very good condition considering its age and fragility of production. With additional interesting LBC ephemera. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
