Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Kyudo: The Way of the Bow is the authoritative guide to the technique and philosophy of the ancient art of Japanese archery. Originally a samurai discipline, kyudo integrates technical skill with the development of a completely focused and disciplined mind. Influenced by Shintoism and Zen, kyudo is a path of self-development and meditation that requires the archer to cultivate precision, a clear mind, and freedom from fear. This detailed, clearly written guide is an indispensable reference for kyudo students and an excellent sourcebook for anyone interested in the history of archery or warfare. The author, Feliks Hoff, a kyudo practitioner for over thirty years, gives a historical and philosophical view of the art and offers practical exercises for cultivating the proper mindset for each shot; detailed instruction on proper form and technique; an overview of the etiquette, dress, and ceremonial aspects of kyudo; and a survey of the various types of equipment used.Hoff presents the basic techniques of the Heki school of kyudo in step-by-step photographs. He also provides exercises for aiming and target shooting and lists common mistakes in form, technique, and concentration along with pointers on how to correct them. For more advanced students, Hoff includes a list of examination requirements and offers advice on teaching beginners. The samurai tradition of archery known as Kyudo integrates the study of technical skills with the development of a focused mind. This text is a clearly written guide to a martial art that is practised by many people in Japan but is little known in the West. First editions thus, first printings, of these secret teachings of the Yamato school of Japanese archery. This school was known for writing a large number of training manuals to be passed down from master to student. This edition was the first time these four manuals were released to the public. They cover firing multiple arrows, archery for ceremonies, and the recollections of great masters. The Yamato school of Japanese Archery was established in the mid-17th century by Morikawa Kozan (1631-1701), a practitioner of the older Heki school. It was noted for its focus on the philosophical and spiritual aspects of archery, as well as for the unusually large number of training manuals it produced, containing secret teachings passed down from master to student. At least 120 manuals have been traced, split into four categories: menkyo (early levels), inka (certification), hi'in sosho (secrets), and yuiju ichinin (techniques known to only one master at a time). The four works in this set are from the inka stage and teach sashiya-mae (firing multiple arrows), ceremonial archery, the teachings of the mid-18th century master Kawanabe Saburozaemon Masaka, and other assorted techniques. The author, Murakawa Kiyoshi (1882-1937), was an archery master and teacher at the Dai Nippon Butoku Kai ("Greater Japan Martial Value Society"), the largest martial arts organization in pre-war Japan. He followed this collection with a further eight-volume set in December 1935. Four works, octavo. Illustrations in text, author's stamp in red to colophons as issued. Original brown cloth wrappers, white thread fukuro-toji binding, spine ends capped in brown cloth, paper labels to front covers lettered in black. Housed in original blue silk brocade chemise with bone toggles, paper label to front panel lettered in black. Signature of one Yamashita Kiyoshi to the final page of each vol. Cloth fresh, some vols. a little foxed; chemise sunned, lower toggle detached: a near-fine set in very good chemise. …
