A previous owner's name to front free endpaper. Boards have moderate shelf wear with mild bumping and fraying to corners and crushing and fraying to spine ends. All surfaces tanned and sunned, particularly spine. Gilt lettering remains bright and clear.

Albert Neil Lyon (1880-1940) was born in the South African town of Kimberley and was educated at Bedford Grammar School in nearby Hanover. After receiving accountancy and legal training but his interests moved to journalism. He wrote articles on military topics and when he was nineteen succeeded in gaining a low level post at The Critic. Soon after this he emigrated to London where he contributed to the weekly newspaper The Clarion. He published several works of both fiction and non-fiction, of which the best known is probably "Arthur's". 'Kitchener Chaps' is one of his lesser-known novels. The book is bound in the original brown cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine and blind stamped titling and design on the front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with some shelf wear on the boards and some creasing to the cloth on the rear spine edge. The spine is slightly darkened with some small stains and the top of the spine is lightly bumped. The contents are tight and clean with light foxing on the endpapers and first and last few pages, including a few faint marks on the title page. There is no inscription.
