Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. A complete copy of the Great "She" Bible, the "authorized version" or King James Bible, one of the greatest monuments of English literature. This edition is known as the "She" Bible for the reading "She went into the citie" in Ruth 3:15. In this copy he error "Judas" for "Jesus" in Matthew 26:36 is corrected with a pasted-on slip. Fry styles this the "first edition, second issue," though it is more properly the second edition. "The general title is usually dated 1613, though the NT title bears the date 1611. Probably the greater part of the book was printed in 1611, but the publication, for some reason or other, was delayed till 1613. . . . Smith suggests [the delay resulted from] an accident in the printing-office which destroyed a large number of sheets" (Herbert). One of the masterpieces of the English language, the King James Bible is surely the greatest literary work ever created by committee. Complete copies of this Bible in early bindings are among the most sought-after books in the English language. Herbert 319. Folio. Contemporary calf over oak boards, brass fittings, rebacked and expertly restored. Some staining and edge wear with preliminaries restored, rare engraved map of the Holy Land, supplied. A very good copy of one of the most sought-after books in the English language, rarely seen complete and in the classic period binding of calf over oak boards.

Rare 1613 folio edition of the great King James "She" Bible", "theÂtrue 1613 folio edition of King James'ÂBible; easily distinguishable fromÂtheÂother large folio editions by its smaller type. TheÂpreliminary leaves are set up as inÂtheÂother large folio editions, butÂtheÂtext is printed in smaller type with 72 instead of 59 lines toÂthe full column" (Herbert; Darlow & Moule). From the library of famed collector Alfred Sutro and decorated with a large fore-edge painting by John T. Beer.ÂFolio, bound in full 19th century paneled calf rebacked with older spine labels preserved, gilt tiles and ruling to the spine in seven compartments within raised banes, gilt ruling to the front and rear panels, inner dentelles elaborately stamped in blind, marbled endpapers, text in two columns, 72 lines, black letter, titles within elaborate historiated woodcut borders featuring the twelve tribes, woodcut initials & headpieces, with the opening calendar printed in red and black, the genealogies, and apocrypha, engraved double-page map of theÂHoly Land by More & Speed, extra-illustrated with 43 engravings by Beilby & Bewick from Ostervald's BibleÂ(Newcastle, 1782) bound atÂthe appropriate chapter and verse. A4 B4 C6 D4 2A-4M6 4N4 plus A-C6 (Speed's Genealogies inserted before OT). Decorated with a large disappearing fore-edge painting by John T. Beer depicting two scenes: "Caleb's daughter pleading for a watered land" and "Christ at the Well of Sychar." With the erroneous phrase found in the first issue âand he went into the citieâ in Ruth 3:15 corrected to ââ¦she wentâ¦â Provenance: John T. Beer (1826-1903, fore-edge painting and his sale, Nov 12, 1903, lot 249 sold to William Ridler, bookseller); Alfred Sutro (1869-1945, bookplate); sold to another private collection, 1976. Exhibition: Museum and Gallery, Bob Jones University, Greenville, SC, 2016-2023. Noted collector and early President of the Book Club of California Alfred Sutro commissioned a pamphlet from the Grabhorn Press in 1938 to celebrate this volume. Darlow & Moule 249; Herbert 322; Weber Beer 29. In very good condition with corner repairs to first 15 and final 4 leaves (incl. loss of 2 letters on A2v), corner creasing and a small ink stain to OT title, map laid down and with losses along edges and of lower corners, final leaf trimmed, laid down and with loss of a few letters, front free endpaper started, gift inscription. An exceptionally rare, complete and unique example of perhaps the most influential text in the English language. "From about the middle of the seventeenth century until the appearance of the Revised Bible of 1881-5, the King James version reigned without rival" (Herbert 319). One of the most influential texts in the English language, Thomas Macaulay anointed it "a book, which if everything else in our language should perish, would alone suffice to show the whole extent of its beauty and power" (PMM 114). The official work of translation was undertaken by nearly 50 scholars over the span of 1604 to 1611, but it can be seen as the culmination of nearly a century of work, beginning with William Tyndale's New Testament translations, and including the bibles of Coverdale and Whitchurch, the Bishops' Bible, the Geneva Bible, and the Rheims New Testament. "Appointed to be read in Churches," the Great "He" Bible was exposed to public usage (on lecterns) and almost all surviving copies have suffered some manner of damage or loss.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. Thomas Scott was born in 1747 at Braytoft in Lincolnshire, the son of a grazier (cattle farmer), the tenth of thirteen children. His mother was better educated than his father and taught Thomas to read, and he went to various small local private schools before being sent at the age of ten to a school in Scorton in Richmondshire, 150 miles away from home. Returning in 1762 he was apprenticed at 15 to a surgeon in nearby Alford, but was soon dismissed for bad conduct. Returning to the family farm in disgrace, he was reduced to working as a labourer for his father, enduring this for ten years before finally leaving home in 1772 to become ordained as an Anglican priest at the age of 25. As he afterwards admitted, he went into the ministry for a comfortable career, and did not believe in most of the doctrine he was required to preach. Scott was first a curate in Buckinghamshire in 1772, and was originally appointed to the adjacent parishes of Stoke Goldington and Weston Underwood. In December 1774 he married Jane Kell, housekeeper to a local family. From 1775 to 1777 Scott served as curate of nearby Ravenstone by virtue of a 'swap' with the curate there. During this period, Scott began a friendship and correspondence with the hymnwriter John Newton who was curate of neighbouring Olney. This instigated the examination of his conscience and study of the Holy Scriptures that were to convert him into an evangelical Christian, a conversion he related in his spiritual autobiography The Force of Truth published in 1779. In 1781, Scott transferred to the curacy of Olney, Newton having gone to London, and in 1785 Scott also moved to London to take up a post as a hospital chaplain at the Lock Hospital for syphilis sufferers. He would walk 14 miles every Sunday, preaching and taking services at various churches, including St. Mildred, Bread Street, and St. Margaret, Lothbury, in addition to his work at the hospital chapel. While in London he started publishing the Commentary On the Whole Bible that was to make his name. His wife died in 1790, and he remarried in 1791. During his time in London, Scott was, with Newton, one of the founders of the Church Missionary Society, and its first secretary. In 1803, Scott left the Lock Hospital to become Rector of Aston Sandford in Buckinghamshire where he remained until his death in 1821. He kept up his involvement with the Church Missionary Society, taking in trainee missionaries for instruction Bound full leather with bossing and working clasps. Pages very good and generally clean though lightly toned. Bound with Book of Common Prayer, Binding tight, text appears complete, a few tiny pinholes in exterior leather. Tables follow both Testaments, separate titles for BCP (preceding OT) and Psalms (following NT). Psalms title reads, "The Whole Book of Psalms, collected into English Metre, by Thomas Sternhold, John Hopkins, and others." Same printer on all title pages, Psalms title dated 1798.
