Contact seller2-star sellerPaperback. Black softcover is in very nice condition. Some very minor soiling.; "Did Joseph Smith Read Egyptian? This question has been asked repeatedly, and answered variously, during the last hundred years. To ask it again involves that one wishes to hear an effective answer. If, for any reason whatever, one answers in the aff…irmative, he can not escape recognizing that, in all human probability, Mr. Smith could not have derived his ability by the usual methods of study; and this for the very sufficient reason that, in his day, none of the presently accessible channels of information on the Egyptian language and writings were available. On the other hand, if one answers negatively, it is only just to inquire in regard to the authority upon which he depends, or in regard to his own knowledge of Egyptian. For, in justice, we must hold that any one's prejudices furnish no competent guide to truth in any connection." ; 6" x 9"; 206 pages Good Foxing. Pages are tight and clean. Previous owners name on contents page. Inside rear back cover the blank page shows signs of staining, does not effect text.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First edition. Original cloth. Very good, bright and clean copy, some spotting to front inside gutter. Illustrated. Presentation copy "To [a member of a prominent Eastern family] with the Compliments of the Author." We learned from a Mormon blog that R. C. Webb was a pseudonym of Jam…es Edward Homans, a Harvard Divinity graduate who became a professional writer. The Harvard training may have given him some background in ancient languages. He was sympathetic to Mormonism but did not become a Mormon. Signed by Author(s).
