He concluded that John Henry might have worked on the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway's (C&O Railway) Big Bend Tunnel but that "one can make out a case either for or against" it. Tha…t tunnel was built near Talcott, West Virginia, from 1870 to 1872 (according to Johnson's dating), and named for the big bend in the Greenbrier River nearby. Octavo: [xii], 155 pp. with a frontispiece and textual musical examples. Original black cloth binding, with gilt-stamped titles. Light foxing to the frontispiece and the opposing leaves. The spine is leaning just a touch, with some minor wear to the corners and tips; else about very good.

Black cloth hardcover with dust jacket, stamped gilt on spine rough cut page edges, pp. 155.…Frontispiece illustration is a facsimile of an old printed version of "The Ballad of John Henry." Part of the University of North Carolina Social Study Series. This is a scholarly investigation into the reality of the famous African American folk hero, John Henry - to separate the "real man" from the one celebrated in American ballads. Overall condition is Very Good. Binding is square and secure, cover shows very little wear. The jacket is intact, but price clipped and chipped at the spine ends and corners with some loss; there is a closed tear to the back flap fold. The previous owner's vintage bookplate is on the pastedown, else endpapers in great shape. Pages show mild age toning, and four pages have a shadowing tan mark (see pictures, the mark shows through pp. 14-17), otherwise no marks, writing, creases or tears. A nice solid copy! Guy Benton Johnson (1901-1991) was a white American sociologist and anthropologist who worked closely with Howard Odum on foundational studies of African American folk music in the early 20th century. He also worked with W.E.B. du Bois to create a comprehensive encyclopedia on Black history and culture, but they never finished it. [C2].

Guy Johnson earned his Ph.D. from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1927 and continued at that institution until retiring in 1969 as Kenan Professor of Sociology and Anthropology. Book was acquired from the estate of a University of Alabama professor who collected volumes from fellow academicians of area institutions; this book's previous owner was likely Dr. Malcolm Elijah Turner III (1929-2004) who served as Professor Emeritus of Biomathematics and Biostatistics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
