Originalbroschur. Condition: Gut. 2 Volumes. XXXVII, 266 S. / XXXIX, 310 S. Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Dr. Albrecht Noth (1937-1999), langjährigem Professor für Geschichte und Kultur des Vorderen Orients in Bonn und Hamburg. Einband leicht berieben. Papierbedingt leicht gebräunt. - "The theme of this book is the history of Islam from the advent of the prophet Muhammad to the capture of Constantinople by Sultan Mehmed, the Conqueror. It is concerned with a period that extends from the beginning of the seventh century to 1453; with a region that expands from Western Arabia to embrace the Middle East and North Africa, as well as parts of Asia, of tropical Africa, and southern and eastern Europe; with peoples and states which, amid many diversities, shared a common acceptance of the faith and law of Islam and professed to live by them; and, finally, with the civilization which they created. "Medieval Islamic historical literature is of immense richness and variety- incomparably greater, for example, than that of medieval Europe. From the literature it is possible to construct with considerable detail and reasonable confidence, a narrative history of events in the Islamic world. . . "For this kind of history, too, the chronicles have much to offer, far more than has yet been exploited. . In a sense the whole literature of Islam is [the historian's] source, including books on religion and sects, politics and economics, philosophy and science, travel, biography, and literary works of every kind. Of particular value are the specialized works arising from the exercise of certain professions. These include the administrative literature of the bureaucracy, the geographical literature of the postal service, the juridical literature of the ulema, and, in a different sense, the eulogies and satires of the poets."- from the Introduction. Book
2 vols. 8vo. (23.5 x 15 cm). pp.xxxvii+266; xxxix+310+[2, ads]. Publisher's original black cloth, spines lettered in gilt, unclipped white dust-jackets printed in red and black. An excellent set. The history of Islam in the Middle Ages, from the advent of the prophet Muhammad to the capture of Constantinople by Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror in 1453, is presented in this comparative two-volume work. The central, formative period of Islam is traced through a collection of original sources representing the broad philosophical and geographical perimeters of the Islamic world. Translations from Arabic, Persian and Turkish sources - many of them not previously available in English -make this work indispensable to the student of the Muslim culture and religion. Volume I analyses the political structure of the Islamic world and the expansion of that world though war. The narration of events is augmented by theoretical and descriptive material. Volume II moves from the state to society, concentrating on the religions, cultural, and social life of the medieval Muslim world. As in Volume I, the discussion covers the entire geographical range of Islamic influence; from western Arabia, the Middle East, and North Africa to parts of Asia, tropical Africa, and southern and eastern Europe. Bernard Lewis was Cleveland E. Dodge Professor of Near East Studies, Princeton University, and a Member of the School of Social Science, Institute for Advanced Study. He was previously Professor of the History of the Near and Middle East at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London.
