Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First edition. Hardback in dustwrapper. 27 × 21cm, 176pp, county map in pocket to rear. From the dustwrapper, "The Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England, after completing their Survey of Westmorland, return to the home counties and have now finished their volume on Middlesex. Proximity to London, although it has entailed in more recent times the disappearance of many of the ancient buildings and memorials of the past which Middlesex once contained, has also provided the county with some remarkably fine specimens of domestic architecture. Although, therefore, prehistoric and Roman remains are scanty there are several important houses, of which Syon House, Swakeleys, Forty Hall Enfield, Cromwell House Highgate and Boston House Brentford, are the chief. Hampton Court, the most extensive surviving example of Tudor domestic building, with its magnificent additions by Sir Christopher Wren, belongs to the country rather than to the county. It has now been re-surveyed by the expert staff of the Royal Commission, and it is fully described and illustrated, over 60 pages being devoted to it. The county contains many churches, it is particularly rich in Renaissance monuments and it provides some interesting examples of medieval and later wall paintings." Condition: Very good condition, with just a little wear to the wrapper along the top edge.
