Contact seller5-star seller8vo. [4], 140 pp. With 3 large folding copper-engraved plates. Contemporary quarter-vellum over marbled boards, green & gilt morocco spine label (minor wear to corners, fore-edges, minor scuffing, very slight occasional foxing), still a superb bright fresh copy w/ fore-edges of textblock uncut, from the library of Dr. Sydney Ross (1915-2013), former professor of colloid chemistry at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY, and founder of the James Clerk Maxwell Foundation, and active bibliophile. First edition of this excellent early treatise on electricity, by the noted Scottish astronomer, instrument maker and author. The plates illustrated his globe electrical machine, with three large Leyden Phials, a view of the works and dial-face of an electrical clock, and an electrical wheel-work orrery, as well as a electrical triple pump. The final section describes several curious experiments with medical electricity, including one where he himself went to Mr. Adlam with a sore throat, where the medical electrician applied electrical sparks to his throat over the course of a couple hours, and he felt cured. Wheeler, I, 429; See: Henderson & Ferguson, Life of James Ferguson, pp. 371-377.…

Add to basketFirst edition. 3 copper engraved plates by Bayly after Ferguson. First printed form of 6 lectures given on the subject. Illustrated with copper plates. 8vo., a very good copy in a contemporary calf binding, with slight cracking to the spine. Elihu Thomson's copy with his signature and bookplate of the Elihu Thomson Collection of the Franklin Institute Library, deaccessioned. Initially Ferguson's lectures dealt mainly with astronomy and mechanics, and resulted in his hugely successful textbooks Astronomy explained upon sir Isaac Newton's Principles (1756) and Lectures on Select Subjects in Mechanics (1760), but from 1768 onwards he included electricity in his lecture courses, and as this topic was not covered in his two text books he produced this introduction. Elihu Thomson was born in Manchester in 1853 and grew up in Massachusetts. He became one of the most prolific inventors in US history, eventually joining Thomas Edison to form the General Electric Company. Thomson was granted 696 US patents for various types of inventions related to electricity, including arc-lights, generators, electric welding machines and X-ray tubes.…
