Add to basketALL UK PARCELS SENT TRACKED! ALL OVERSEAS PARCELS SENT AIRMAIL, TRACKED! (S/hand, Hardcover, 1990). (1977) 1990 Bloomsbury edition. Pp350. B/w photograph plates & illustrations, maps, bibliography. Pale yellow boards. Slight use but very good in like dust-wrapper. This is an excellent introduction to how genetic selection and inheritance work, and how this relates to population biology and the practical aspects of conservation. A great range of species is addressed, from dog whelks to trees, insects to birds, with the facts of well known studies such as the peppered moth and the meadow brown butterfly. Chapters include: The study of differences - genes and not-genes; Pools of genes; Sex and breeding; Natural selection and how it works; Genetical plumbing and architecture; Ecological islands and niches; Genes, survival, and adjustment in an island population of the house mouse; Human influences; Why be variable? An appendix deals with mitosis and meiosis. Although published before the recent enormous advances in this field (or perhaps because of this) this book is still an informative and interesting read. .

Add to basketCloth. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Hardback. First Edition. Inheritance and Natural History. Slight foxing to edge. Previous owners name to inside cover. This absorbing book is about genetics as it applies to the world around us. Its main aim is to show the way in which inheritated variation can help to explain the properties of natural populations: the difference between individuals, the extent and mechanism for transmitting characteristics from one generation to another, and the factors which control the frequency of a trait in a local group. It is thus of interest not only to naturalist but also to farmers and gardeners - indeed it is highly relevant to each one of us in the context of modern social planning. Professor Berry's explanations, combining laboratory techniques for the biochemical study of changes in cells, and understanding of modern genetics, and field observations by himself and others, are addressed not just to the earnest student but to all those who wonder why people or organisms differ - why snails are striped; why mice have longer tails in Scotland than in England; why primroses have three sorts of flowers; or about melanic forms of moths, spiders and ladybirds in industrial areas; pesticide resistance in rats and mice, mosquitoes and green-fly; antibiotic resistance in disease organisms - all examples of genetic adjustment. Illustrated. 350 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions, Reference books ,and all types of Academic Literature.).
