Hardcover w/ Jacket. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. This 5.25 x 6.75 inch, unpaginated hardcover book with dust wrapper is an apparent First Edition ? Later State of this title. This book is in spectacularly fine condition with virtually no sign of age or handling wear showing to the paper-covered boards with black cloth spine strip. This copy shows the 1952 copyright with only the LOC catalog number . . . but no additional printing information provided. This copy does have the gr-r-r on about page 23. This book shows no damage or markings inside or out with the paper covers virtually As New and the interior text clean and in fine condition. The text pages show four pages with the tips of the bottom corners dog-eared ? but this is only one-sixteenth of a fold ? and have flattened out nicely. The dust wrapper is in near fine condition with just a bit of discoloration and wear at the top and bottom of the folds and with a quarter-inch closed tear on the top edge ? and a small tear and fold at the spine bottom. The wrapper shows a $2.50 at the top of the front flap, a 30-70 code at the bottom of the front flap ? and the short bio of illustrator Sendak mentions no previous publications ? and with the rear panel indicating the author Krauss with six previous published works. The dust jacket does show the top and bottom corners of the front flap clipped. The jacket is now protected by a mylar cover.

HC. ill. by Maurice Sendak (illustrator). An Exceptionally nice copy, owners name on top front of dustjacket and on front free endpaper. Typed poem on Love, taped to rear free endpaper with one strip of tape at top. $1.50 price on dustjacket flap, teal cloth spine with paper covered boards illustrated same as dustjacket. The dust jacket is price-clipped but the front inside flap is marked with 30-70 and the back flap "About the Author and Artist" does not include the reference to The Wonderful Farm. So this is at least a second state book in a second state dust jacket. A few smudges on the board panels. Lower-most board edges are scuffed. Upper back fore-edge corner tipped is rubbed through. One small margin smudge else book is internally clean. Text block is snug. Dust jacket is soiled overall. Several small damp stains on front panel; small stains and a bit of overall grubbiness on the back jacket panel. Spine and fore-edge folds are scuffed, heavily on the lower ends and with several rub-throughs at the tail of spine. Upper edge at head of jacket spine is rubbed and chipped and with closed vertical tears of 3/8" and 1/4" on the front and back corners. The upper edge of back panel has a slightly diagonal 1" closed tear toward the upper right corner. The lower right front fore-edge corner has a closed 3/4" closed vertical tear along the fold and with adjacent rubs; the other three fore-edge corners are rubbed and with minimal loss. The upper edge of front panel has a few small closed vertical tear of 1/4" or less, with adjacent rubs, chips and creases; the upper edge of back panel has one 1/4" closed vertical tear near the upper left corner. Both corners of the front inside flap have been clipped- see photo. Please use close-up options for best inspection and in support of condition descriptions. Fore edge of text block has a couple of stains. Front panel of jacket has a large diagonal tear splitting the jacket in two. Edges of jacket have chips, tears, creases, and pieces missing. Jacket has sunning, toning, and stains. Jacket is poor with many flaws.

This copy has the teal cloth spine and dark brown lettering on the front cover along with the Gr-r-r-r on page 23 making it the 2nd issue of the 1st edition. This copy has the 1st state dust jacket with a price of $1.50. The book and its contents are in generally clean, bright condition. There is some beginning foxing and toning to the top rear cover of the book, along with some beginning bumping to the spine ends and corners. The text pages are clean and bright. The dust jacket is mostly clean and bright with some noticeable toning / sunning to the spine and rear cover, along with an inch long semi-closed tear to the top front spine joint. The top spine of the dust jacket has been nicked off and there is some rubbing / creasing to the spine as well. This book was the winner of the 1st New York Times Best Illustrated Children's Book Award.

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition, Illustrated Edition. Stiff paper wraps with Sendak illustration to front. Sewn binding with string is tight and booklet is square and free of major flaws other than some rubbing and small holes to front right upper corner. Copyright page has only 1952 with a note about this printing. No other softcover versions from the first printing are found - "thanks to a number of children and teachers in the Harriet Johnson Nursery School; and special thanks to children in the Rowayton School Kindergarten, and their teacher, Harriet S. Sherman." This book was the first for Sendak and Krauss and helped launch Sendak's career, published 3 years before Harold and the Purple Crayon. Sendak would go on to illustrate seven additional Krauss titles.
