Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Allen and Unwin 1937 1st printing of the 1st Edition. We are thrilled to offer the now super rare Hobbit 1st/1st. This is a separate copy from my set of the first four Hobbit printings. We are not splitting up that set. These come up for sale so rarely we cannot say when we will see another, especially in the original jacket. Jacket covers have some darkening to spine, covers bright. The jacket would normally have some tattering to the spine head and top edge, but it has had some minor restoration, so looks as new. This is less than 5% of the jacket so not significant at all. One without repair would sell for 50% more. We know, as we are selling one. The book has slight lean, a little grubbiness to clothe edges, but clean overall with no foxing. This book is needs no introduction or description to Tolkien or first edition collectors. The Tolkien market continues to dominate modern editions in demand and price thanks to another round of films and other projects in the works. The price may seem high, but within a couple years we expect it to be even higher. The last copy to sell under auction about six months ago went for $300,000 dollars.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. 1st edition, 1st printing, so stated. 8vo size, One of the most beloved editions of Tolkien s enduring classic, a staple of Generation X s childhood libraries. Bound in green pebbled leatherette with cover illustration stamped in gilt, bordered by a runic design stamped in gilt and red, with similar spine design and gilt titles. All edges marbled in green. A lavishly produced edition, with Thror's map reproduced on front and back endpapers, and all of Tolkien s original illustrations for The Hobbit, both those in green and black, and the full-page watercolor plates, including Hobbiton, Rivendell, and the Conversation with Smaug. There is a bit of top corner wear, slight fading to the stain on the fore edge, and the slightest smudge on the margin of the front Thror's map--not affecting the image--but otherwise the book is fine. In a VG+ slipcase with mild scuffing and scattered small flaws. In uncertain economic times, what better way to invest your money than in items of lasting value you can hold in hand and enjoy?

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. An exceptionally clean, near fine, copy of the fourth (and last) printing of the first edition Hobbit, 1946. The book, with the correct fourth impression dust jacket, has become increasingly rare in this condition. George Allen and Unwin printed just over 4000 copies to war time economy standards, the vast majority of which did not survive and very few surviving in this condition. No signatures, inscriptions, book plates or markings of any kind. Some light foxing to the text block edges, but no stains and no reader handling marks, text clean throughout, binding firm. The boards and spine are beautifully clean and bright, no fading and exceptional as there is no shelf wear, corners sharp, and the green top colour is still present. The very good 4th impression dust jacket retains very good colour, has closed tears, light chipping to the spine corners and is price clipped. Tolkien's eight black and white illustrations are present, along with the colour frontispiece, all are in excellent condition. These are the same as the earlier impressions, with the exception of the very first impression, in which the frontispiece was also black and white. This edition contains the original version of Bilbo's encounter with Gollum, which was revised for the 1951 impression of The Hobbit, to bring it in line with, and in readiness for, the release of The Lord of the Rings.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien - First Edition, Fourth Impression (1946) with Original Dust Jacket. Rare first edition, fourth impression (1946) of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit, featuring the original dust jacket and illustrations by the author. In very good condition with minor foxing and a clean text block. Perfect for Tolkien collectors. The Hobbit J.R.R. Tolkien First Edition, Fourth Impression (1946) Published by George Allen & Unwin, London Illustrated by J.R.R. Tolkien Rare Collectible Edition of The Hobbit - Featuring Tolkien's Illustrations and Original Gollum Encounter A beautiful first edition, fourth impression (1946) copy of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit, in its original dust jacket. The book is bound in green cloth featuring the distinctive black illustration of Smaug, drawn by Tolkien himself. This edition is one of 4,032 copies printed. Dust Jacket in very good condition, showing some wear, but still remarkably well-preserved for its age. Minor foxing appears on the outer part of the jacket, primarily on the spine and edges. The inside flaps remain clean and white, with no significant issues to note. The artwork on the jacket front, featuring Tolkien's iconic illustration of the Misty Mountains, still presents vivid and bright colors, with just some small tears and chips around the edges, most notably near the spine and corners. Book Condition is very good. The green cloth cover with the black illustration of Smaug is in very good condition, with minimal shelf wear on the corners and edges. The spine remains solid and firm. There is some very minor foxing present on the front endpapers and on a few pages (notably pages 30-31 and 170-174), but otherwise, the pages are clean and free of markings. The map endpapers (featuring Thror's Map and the Map of Wilderland) are intact and clear. The binding is in excellent condition, holding firm with no loose pages. The text block is clean, with minor toning on the edges. There is a small pencil inscription of a name on page 3 (as seen in the images), but no other markings or inscriptions. All illustrations are present and in excellent condition. This fourth impression includes eight black-and-white illustrations by Tolkien, as per the earlier impressions, but no color illustrations. This edition is highly sought after, as it contains the original version of Bilbo's encounter with Gollum, which was later revised in subsequent editions after the success of The Lord of the Rings. Tolkien's own artwork is featured in both the dust jacket and the book itself, making this edition a prized piece for collectors. This fourth impression was published in 1946, with a limited run of 4,032 copies. The first impression of The Hobbit was published in 1937, and all four impressions of the first edition feature the original unaltered text of the famous encounter with Gollum, making these early printings highly collectible. This is a rare opportunity to own a very well-preserved early edition of one of the most beloved fantasy novels of all time.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. Condition: Near-Fine. 1st edition: 4th impression, so stated on the limitation page. The only real defect on the book is a small stain on the text block fore edge. The book is very clean inside and out, and the covers and spine are clean and bright. The text is also clean and bright. The maps of Lonely Mountain in the front and Wilderland in the back are also clean and bright, with just a tiny hint of age browning on the edge of the Wilderland free end paper. A 1-inch tear has been closed and repaired at the bottom of pps. 127-128, and the front free endpaper map page has 2 very slight creases, one on the upper right corner, and another on the following blank page. The book has been conserved, and Tolkien's famous original jacket has in addition been expertly restored to near-pristine condition--Please contact us if you are interested in the details of this item's conservation and restoration. The 4th impression was the last printing of Tolkien's original story, before his revisions to the book in the early 1950s to more closely comport with the story of The Lord of the Rings, then in progress.
