Apparemment, cet unique exemplaire se trouve actuellement dans la réserve de la BnF, d'après lequel a été exécutée notre réimpression.L'ouvrage décrit un pays imaginaire placé, à la structure fortement collectiviste, "où l'on n'attache nulle honte à l'acte de reproduction, où les enfants sont élevés par l'État et où l'on jouit d'un vrai bonheur, parce qu'il est conforme à la nature et à la raison". Il commence par l'itinéraire en Lituanie d'un protestant chassé de France par la révocation de l'Édit de Nantes, Christofile, de sa fille Eudoxe (qui, née d'une mère catholique, est alternativement protestante et catholique) et de son gendre Alâtre, et surtout y rapporte leurs entretiens avec les Avaïtes, habitants d'un pays imaginaire. Pour être admis à Calejava, il faut que les voyageurs soient "persuadés de l'existence d'un Dieu, de l'immortalité de l'âme et des peines et des récompenses de l'autre vie" ; mais il faut en même temps qu'ils soient "convaincus de ces vérités par des raisons solides et naturelles et non par l'autorité", car le sieur Gilbert, en cela parfaitement conformiste, rejette dogmes et miracles et prêche la tolérance et la solidarité, conditions du bonheur auquel Dieu destine les hommes et qu'ils peuvent acquérir en suivant la raison.
