Ouvrage très intéressant et largement illustré dans le texte. Quelques hors-texte et cartes en couleurs. Un troisième volume, Les Empires, fut publié en 1899. Exemplaire à l'intéressante provenance : Jane Dieulafoy (1851-1916), fameuse archéologue, avec son nom en pied de dos « J. Dieulafoy ». Demi-basane d'époque, dos orné, couvertures du premier volume conservés, uniquement la première couverture du second volume. Quelques cahiers légèrement décalés (ouvrages lourds), charnière intérieure du premier volume ouverte au niveau du titre (volume parfaitement solidaire). Bon ouvrage, rare avec l'autographe et la provenance.
