Major Alexander Wallace Fielding DSO (26 November 1918 19 August 1991) was a British author, translator, journalist and traveller, who served as a Special Operations Executive agent in Crete, France and the Far East during World War II. Following the fall of France, Fielding joined the Army, and was commissioned into the Cyprus Regiment as a second lieutenant on 1 September 1940. After the fall of Crete in May 1941, he joined the Special Operations Executive, and was eventually landed in Crete with a supply of weapons and explosives by the submarine Torbay, under Commander Anthony Miers. Fielding teamed up with Patrick Leigh Fermor, and built an intelligence gathering network which provided detailed information on the movement of Axis troops, shipping, and air transport. Fielding died in Paris, France, in 1991. (Wikipedia). Sprache: english.

Add to basket8vo., First Edition, with 15 plates on 8 and endpaper maps in red; red cloth, backstrip lettered in silver, a near fine copy. With neat personal name stamp on front free endpaper. Arguably the scarcest of all the SOE personal memoirs. Fielding (1918-1991) was one of the first SOE agents (with Paddy Leigh Fermor and Dick Barnes) to be landed in Crete where he spent two years or so in a precarious game of hide and seek with the occupying Germans. Arrested in France later in the war, he was saved from execution by the Polish SOE agent Krystyna Skarbek. In post-war years a close friend of Lawrence Durrell, Fielding developed a career as writer and translator, achieving acclaim for his translation of 'The Bridge on the River Kwai'. EXTREMELY SCARCE. Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First UK edition published by Secker & Warburg in 1954. This is a very good copy. The notoriously fragile wrapper is better than is usually found. There are small amounts of loss to the corners and some wear to the spine ends. The panels of the jacket are clean and it isn't price clipped. The book has a couple of faint marks to the front boards. Otherwise the book is in excellent condition. Overall a very good copy. The highly illustrative jacket design is by Anthony Baynes. Fielding's account of his activities as a wartime agent in crete during WW2. A rare book to find in this condition. .
