Paperback. Condition: Good. A poet whose verse inspired music by Schubert, Schumann, Mendelssohn and Brahms, Heinrich Heine (1797-1856) was in his lifetime equally admired for his elegant prose. This collection charts the development of that prose, beginning with three meditative works from the Travel Pictures, inspired by Heine's journeys as a young man to Lucca, Venice and the Harz Mountains. Exploring the development of spirituality, the later On the History of Religion and Philosophy in Germany spans the earliest religious beliefs of the Germanic people to the philosophy of Hegel, and warns with startling force of the dangers of yielding to 'primeval Germanic paganism'. Finally, the Memoirs consider Heine's Jewish heritage and describe his early childhood. As rich in humour, satire, lyricism and anger as his greatest poems, together the pieces offer a fascinating insight into a brilliant and prophetic mind.…

Add to basketSoft cover. Condition: VG. 22pp extract, salvaged from a damaged issue of North American Review, Volume XII, No. 31, April, 1821. A somewhat contemporary review in English of the very scarce or rare titles, the first of which was published by G. C. Keil, Magdeburg, 1806. Referencing the second title, the editor notes, "The second work at the head of the article contains an account of a rapid pedestrian excursion to the Harz, written in a hasty manner, apparently with no other object than the gratification of the friends of the travellers. As it has never been published, we shall devote the rest of this article to some copious extracts from it." The text includes an account of Andreasberg and the mines, an account of the path from Andreasberg to the Brocken, or summit of the Harz Mountains, a description of the Brocken, a description of Quedlinberg, a passage on the popular superstitions which prevail in the mountains, and a description of Goslar and a descent into the copper mines. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. A guidebook to walking in Germany's most northerly mountains, located in central Germany, in Europe, between Hannover and Leipzig, with walks mainly within the Hochharz National Park. The Harz Mountains are a paradise for walkers. As rich in natural beauty as in legend, this is one of the most accessible areas in Germany for the walker. It is easy to reach by road and rail from North Sea ports, is served by excellent local transport, offers a choice of accommodation and is criss-crossed by superbly waymarked forest and hill paths - all of which make walking a delight even for the least experienced. Saxon Kings and Princes sought minerals in the region, creating towns whose medieval splendour survives. Around the legendary Brocken is one of Europe's newest and most distinctive National Parks. Wild boar, deer and wild cats still roam the ancient forests and deep gorges. You'll also find Europe's largest and most extensive narrow-gauge steam railway network, a delight for rail-buffs and nostalgics alike, providing superb, car-free access to some of the area's finest walking country. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.…
