Minor issues present such as mild cracking, inscriptions, inserts, light foxing, tanning and thumb marking. Boards have mild shelf wear with light rubbing and corner bumping. The American Trites' early work won admiration from W.D. Howells and Frank Harris. The Gypsy, the story of a painter's unwise obsession with his gypsy model, was toned down for its publication in England in 1928; but, though reviewers pronounced it 'unforgettable' and 'indubitably a work of genius', with L.P. Hartley calling it 'a masterpiece', it seems to have been quickly forgotten.
