Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book follows the extraordinary life of General William Tecumseh Sherman from his humble beginnings to his role as a prominent figure in the American Civil War. Coming from a family of judges, Sherman demonstrated outstanding intellect and leadership qualities from a young age. After graduating from West Point in 1840, he served under the command of General Winfield Scott during the Second Seminole War. His experiences in the American West greatly influenced his military strategy and tactics. Sherman's clear grasp of military principles, combined with his bold and decisive leadership, made him a formidable commander. The book offers insights into Sherman's personal life, his relationships with Ulysses S. Grant and Abraham Lincoln, and his impact on the course of the war. By exploring Sherman's strategies, campaigns, and contributions, this book provides a comprehensive view of his role in shaping the destiny of the United States during one of its most pivotal periods. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very good-. First Edition. 12mo, 353pp., illustrated, plus advertisements. Rebound in modern blue library buckram, with new endpapers. A few mild library markings internally, and a Civil War-themed personal bookplate to the front paste-down. Contents otherwise clean and sound' about very good overall. Ownership signature of J. D. Cox, and his inked date of March, 1899 on the half-title page, and his initials in four places on the Contents page, indicating where he had helped the ailing Force complete his manuscript. An index card with some notes from the previous owner on this subject is neatly hinged to the front free endpaper. (Note that the book is NOT signed by Force, who died very soon after publication.). Cox served as a Major-General during the Civil War, and commanded an entire Division under Maj. Gen. Schofield during the Atlanta Campaign, among his other lengthy wartime esploits. His intimate knowledge of Sherman's Atlanta campaign put him in a good position to help Manning Force complete his military biography of William Tecumseh Sherman. Force devotes the final paragraph of his Preface to acknowledging and thanking Cox for his significant contributions to this book. Cox was elected Governor of Ohio just after the Civil War, and served as Secretary of the Interior in the Grant administration, as well as in a number of other public roles. He, like Force, died not very long after publication, in 1900. This copy, despite its regrettable rebind, is signfiicant as a document of the book's true authorship. Signed. …
