Add to basket2 volumes. 4to. (12 1/2 x 9 3/4 inches). Volume I: ix, [1] pp. 104 plates (title page + 103 plates). Volume II: 27, [1] pp. 105 plates (2 plates containing tracings of natural leaves + 103 plates, including the title page). Of the 209 plates, 42 plates are coloured with many heightened in gold (including the two illuminated title pages). Publisher's original cloth, boards gilt stamped with gothic devices, front boards and spines lettered gilt A foundational work of the Gothic Revival and a superb example of Victorian architectural publishing. A fine copy in original cloth. First edition of one of the most sumptuous and influential visual compendia of Gothic ornament published in Victorian Britain, conceived and drawn by the architect and draughtsman James Kellaway Colling. The present work was part of a broader movement in mid-19th century Britain to revive interest in medieval design, inspired in part by the writings of A.W.N. Pugin and John Ruskin. As stated in the 'Address,' the author intended the work to "preserve these specimen of by-gone taste, which are fast decaying, and unlikely ever to be restored." Colling's background as an architectural draftsman is evident in the extraordinary precision and elegance of the plates, which depict tracery, mouldings, foliated capitals, bosses, stained glass, woodcarvings, tiles, ironwork, and other decorative elements sourced from English cathedrals, parish churches, and secular buildings. Particularly notable are the colour plates, many heightened in gold, which exemplify the contemporary fascination with polychromy in Gothic design. The inclusion of tracings from natural foliage in volume II reflects Colling's pedagogical intent, linking natural forms with their stylized Gothic counterparts, a principle central to 19th-century design reform. The work was widely admired and remained influential among architects, designers, and students well into the later 19th century. Colling would go on to publish other major architectural pattern books, including Details of Gothic Architecture (1852-56) and Art Foliage (1865), and played a significant role in the dissemination of medieval stylistic vocabulary through both publishing and practice.
