Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Intuition suggests that a perfectly smooth sphere will travel through the air faster and further than a rough, bumpy one. In the strict laws of fluid dynamics, however, intuition is completely wrong. If you hit a perfectly smooth golf ball, it will drop out of the sky after 100 yards, suffocated by its own aerodynamic drag. This fascinating exploration breaks down the physics of the golf ball dimple. When a smooth ball flies, the air separates from the surface very early, leaving a massive, low-pressure 'drag wake' behind the ball that violently pulls it backward. The dimples solve this by intentionally creating a thin layer of chaotic, turbulent air right at the surface (the boundary layer). This turbulence forces the air to stick to the ball much longer, drastically shrinking the drag wake and allowing the ball to slice through the atmosphere and fly twice as far.We trace the history from smooth leather balls to the modern, hyper-engineered urethane spheres with exactly 336 mathematically arranged dimples designed to optimize the Magnus effect for backspin.Master the invisible friction of the sky. Understand how intentionally adding microscopic turbulence is the absolute key to athletic aerodynamic perfection.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - This book establishes a comprehensive understandingof the role that shaft stiffness plays in executinga golf drive. A thorough set of experiments wasconducted to answer explicit questions related tothis goal. Specifically, how does shaft stiffnessaffect clubhead speed and how does it alter clubheadorientation at impact What are the underlyingmechanisms responsible for the pattern of shaftdeflection occurring during the downswing For thefirst time, a 3D, 6-segment forward dynamics modelof a golfer and club was developed to answer thesequestions. The golfer model was optimized formaximum clubhead speed using a genetic algorithmthat determined the best activation pattern for thesimulated muscles that provided energy to thesystem. High speed video data of shaft bendingduring the swings of actual golfers were collectedto assess the validity of the model. In addition tothe findings on shaft stiffness, the development ofthe model led to an understanding of the role thatpassive joint forces play in squaring the club forimpact. This book also serves as a solidintroduction to forward dynamics modelling.
