This is the original 1938 publication, not the 1987 facsimile reprint. A fine copy, entirely clean and unworn in moderately edgeworn jacket.

First edition of this lavishly illustrated engineering report detailing the Herculean efforts to build the Golden Gate Bridge, including a detailed history of the project, the planning stages, construction, materials, and finished construction. Although Strauss and his original team incorporated Ellis (d. 1949), Strauss managed to shunt Ellis aside in November, 1931 after several delays, and forced him into retirement and long stretches of unemployment, even though he continued work unpaid on the calculations and structure of the Golden Gate Bridge.

The folding plans show the main bridge plan and elevation, cross-sections and diagrams of the towers, the road and piers, plans of the cable anchorage, details of the tower bases, etc., etc. Extensively illustrated throughout. The Supplement expands the information to include major structural modifications made since opening day. The supplemental illustrations include many extra photographs and plates and 3 new large folding plans showing cross-sections and diagrams of the towers, the road and piers. Book.

Book is beautiful, a touch of rubbing at the bottom of the boards. Of note: The fold-out color frontispiece has a dog-ear crease at the upper corner. Dust jacket has large pieces missing from both front and rear panels and the top and bottom of the spine. There are small stains, prominent tears, creases, and interior amateur tape mends. We will send in a protective archival sleeve. The accompanying 50th Anniversary Edition (1987) is Near Fine, in a Very Good- dust jacket. Dust jacket is generally worn with chips, scuffs, abrasions, and a tear at the bottom left of the front panel with an amateur tape mend upon the exterior.
