"Admired by Poincaré for his 'unity of thought', Weierstrass was the most important nineteenth century German mathematician after Gauss and Riemann." (D.S.B.). Weierstrass (1815-97) introduced rigor into mathematical analysis and considerably enlarged the understanding of functions. The present volume, which traces his development of the modern theory of functions, gathers seven previously published papers, the first six appearing from 1876 to 1881, and the last his 1854 'Über die Theorie der analytischen Facultäten' which he revised. An important publication on Weierstrass' primary contribution to mathematics especially since his collected works of 1895 to 1927, intended at ten volumes, only went to seven failing to include many of his papers on the theory of functions.
