Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book provides a detailed account of the murder trial of Matt. F. Ward, who was charged with killing William H. G. Butler in November 1853. The trial drew widespread attention due to the high-profile nature of both the victim and the accused. Butler was a prominent educator and the principal of a prestigious school in Louisville, Kentucky, while Ward was a wealthy businessman and politician. The trial featured an intense examination of the events leading up to the shooting, including testimony from eyewitnesses, forensic experts, and character witnesses. The book delves into the complex legal strategies employed by both the prosecution and the defense, as well as the social and political context of the trial. It offers a unique window into the American justice system of the mid-19th century and the ways in which it grappled with issues of class, race, and violence. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…

McDade explains: "Butler, the principal of Louisville High School, had whipped Matt Ward's younger brother. Matt demanded an apology of Butler, not for the whipping but for calling the boy a liar. The apology not forthcoming, words followed; and Ward, having come prepared for blood, shot Butler. Kentucky justice was that Ward was promptly acquitted" McDade 1042. Sabin 70981.…

Square, tight binding and unmarked pages. Foxing throughout Clark volume. Toning to the Ward volume but no evidence of foxing. Two pamphlets bound as one, each the lone edition of the title in question. Finely detailed contemporaneous sources on a pair of infamous nineteenth-century murders. In the case of the Clark trial, he "was apparently infatuated with a girl who married Wight. With no warning he shot Wight through the head while Wight was kneeling to tie a bundle. The crime and trial were in New Haven, Connecticut; Clark was acquitted on the ground of insanity." The Ward case began with a matter of school discipline and devolved from there: "Butler, the principal of Louisville High School, had whipped Matt Ward's younger brother. Matt demanded an apology of Butler, not for the whipping but for calling the boy a liar. The apology not forthcoming, words followed; and Ward, having come prepared for blood, shot Butler. Kentucky justice was that Ward was promptly acquitted. A pair of uncommon pamphlets, available in a single, bound volume. Size: Octavo. Book.…
