Daudet's novel appeared in France in 1874, and the first English edition (under the title Fromont the Younger and Risler the Elder) was issued by Henry Vizetelly in 1880. By 1894 the Vizetelly firm had folded and Vizetelly's son Edward oversaw this new (or rather revised) translation. Book.
