Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book is a collection of essays on the author's experiences exploring nature and the changing seasons. The author takes a leisurely approach to his explorations, preferring to observe and interact with the natural world rather than simply rush through it. As a result, he is able to notice and appreciate the small details that most people miss. The essays are full of vivid descriptions of the natural world, and the author's deep appreciation for the beauty of nature is evident on every page. The author also discusses the importance of slowing down and taking the time to appreciate the natural world. In this fast-paced world, it is easy to get caught up in the daily grind and forget to take the time to enjoy the simple things in life. This book is a reminder that there is still beauty to be found in the world, if we only take the time to look for it. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good+. First Edition; First Printing. 8vo; viii, (iv), 11-233 pages; OCLC 7391898404 Contents clean and secure in original green cloth decorative binding; spine mildly faded, otherwise quite a very nice example of this lovely book. Illustrated with four full page plates, including frontispiece by Alice Barber Stephens. Binding Designer: Original green cloth publisher's binding with art nouveau design signed "H", the usual signature of Edward Stratton Holloway. A noted author as well as landscape artist, Edward Stratton Holloway (1859-1939) was born in the hamlet of Ashland, New York, surrounded by the Catskill Mountains. Little is known about his early education, but as a young man he undertook formal instruction at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and exhibited there intermittently beginning in 1881 and continuing through 1905. Other important exhibition venues include the National Academy of Design (1888), Art Institute of Chicago (1897, 1904), and the 1904 St. Louis Exposition, where his work was awarded the bronze medal. Holloway pursued a career in commercial art as well, serving as the art director for the Philadelphia publishing house of J. B. Lippincott for forty-six years. It was in this capacity that he came to author several books on interior design and furnishings, including The Practical Book of Interior Decoration and American Furniture and Decoration: Colonial and Federal. Holloway was also the art adviser to publisher J.P. Lippincott. He designed many book bindings in the late 19th and early 20th Century, like this classic Ninties binding. THE AUTHOR: Charles Conrad Abbott (1843â"1919) was an American archaeologist and naturalist, who studyied medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Abbott served as a surgeon in the Union Army during the American Civil War, but after the War, he never practiced medicine again. Instead, he turned to natural history and writing, settling along the banks of the Delaware River at Trenton and becoming a gentleman farmer. His homestead, known as Marshlands is now the Abbott Farm District National Historic Landmark. It was at Marshlands that Dr. Abbott wrote published many books and articles, including Primitive Industry: Illustrations of the Hand-work in Stone, Bone, and Clay of the Native Races of the Northern Atlantic Seaboard of America (1881) and more literary works on nature, like this book. In 1872, Abbott reported finding man-made implements in the Trenton glacial gravels on his farm. The large crudely flaked stone tools resembled Acheulean handaxes being found in Europe. He labelled the stone tools from the Trenton Gravels âpaleolithsâ and claimed that they were evidence of prehistoric humans in the region during the glacial period. From 1876 to 1889, he was assistant curator of the Peabody Museum in Cambridge, Massachusetts, to which he presented a collection of 20,000 archaeological specimens; he freely gave also to other archaeological collections. From 1890 to 1894 he served as the first curator of the University of Pennsylvania's newly organized Department of American Archaeology. William Henry Holmes questioned Abbott's assertions which sparked an international debate and forty-year controversy concerning the antiquity of man in the New World. Eventually, Abbottâs claim that man was present in the North America prior to the end of the ice age was disproven. Today the consensus of archaeologists is that most of Abbott's "Trenton Gravel Implements" date from the Middle Woodland period of about A.D. 300â"900, not the paleolithic era. As a result of these controveries, the American Palaeolithic was erased from textbooks in the 1890s and disappeared from public view until the 1920s when discoveries of human activity in the Clovis and Folsom cultures in New Mexico were datied back to the end of the Pleistocene. These developments represented a partial vindication of Dr. Abbottâs views, but did not validate the antiquity of his own archeological discoveries. Nonetheless, many significant arc. …
