Hardcover. Condition: Very Good+. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good to Good. 1st Edition. Inscribed First Edition, First Printing of this professional memoir of a dynamic early 20th century individual who was a novelist, psychiatrist, and Episcopal priest. Oliver was the innovative chief medical officer for the courts in Baltimore who had shifted to psychology and medicine after early and somewhat traumatic clerical training. He wrote movingly of the complexities and obstacles of the religious life in his novel "Victim and Victor" which was a controversial runner up for the 1929 Pulitzer Prize. Issues surrounding homosexuality profoundly shaped his perspectives, even if often only elliptically addressed in his writings. He was disposed during his clerical training for homosexuality and sexual orientation and its repression informed his perspectives on psychology and religion. Inscribed and dated by John Rathbone Oliver on the front endpaper. The previous owner's bookplate is also on that page. Brown cloth, 305 pages. The dust jacket has a chip at the top edge of the spine and is a bit soiled. Signed by Author(s).…

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - 'Four Square' is an introspective and multi-faceted autobiography that examines the life of John Rathbone Oliver through four primary vocations. Oliver, a distinguished psychiatrist and an ordained priest, structures his narrative around the four 'squares' that define his identity: the Physician, the Criminologist, the Scholar, and the Priest. This structure allows for a comprehensive exploration of the human experience, ranging from the technicalities of medical and legal practice to the spiritual depth of pastoral ministry. The work is particularly noted for its early 20th-century insights into mental health and the legal system, as well as its attempts to bridge the gap between scientific inquiry and religious devotion. Oliver's prose is both scholarly and accessible, providing a window into the evolution of psychiatric thought and the challenges of maintaining faith in a scientific age. 'Four Square' is a compelling testament to a life dedicated to healing-both of the body and the spirit-and offers significant value to those interested in the history of medicine, criminology, and the intersection of psychology and religion. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. This work was reproduced from the original artifact, and remains as true to the original work as possible.
