Green lettering piece on spine. Gilt year "1823" at tail of spine. Gilt decoration to edges of boards. Gilt dentelles. Marbled endpapers. Page dimensions: 133 x 81mm. This 1823 volume is the first issue of this annual series. "The British Public is here presented with the first attempt to rival the numerous and elegant publications of the Continent, expressly designed to serve as tokens of remembrance, friendship, or affection, at that season of the year which ancient customs has particularly consecrated to the interchange of such memorials." - page (v). "The Plates consist of a highly finished engraving, by AGAR, of a Madonna, after Gemignano, on whom the genius of his master Raphael so largely rested, and emblematical representations of the Twelve Months, also engraved by AGAR, from designs by BURNEY.
