Contact seller5-star sellerFirst edition of this final military report from the heroic Commander-in-Chief of the American Expeditionary Forces. Octavo, original wrappers, illustrated with sixteen folding plates of maps, diagrams, and charts. Boldly signed by General John J. Pershing on the title page. In very good condition with light wear to the extremit…ies and a chip to the spine. Rare signed. General of the Armies John Joseph "Black Jack" Pershing was a senior United States Army officer. He served most famously as the commander of the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) on the Western Front in World War I, 1917â"18. In addition to leading the A.E.F. to victory in World War I, Pershing notably served as a mentor to many in the generation of generals who led the United States Army during World War II, including George Marshall, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Omar Bradley, Lesley J. McNair, George S. Patton and Douglas MacArthur. During his command in WWI, Pershing rejected British and French demands that American forces be integrated with their armies, and insisted that the AEF would operate as a single unit under his command, although some American divisions fought under British command, and he also allowed all-black units to be integrated with the French army.

First edition, presentation copy, inscribed by the author on an initial blank, "For Major John C. Hughes, with sincere affection, John J. Pershing". John Chambers Hughes (1891-1971) served in France with the American Expeditionary Force from 1917 to 1919 and was appointed Pershing's aide-de-camp during the Meuse-Argonne offensiv…e of September 1918. After the war, he returned to civilian life with the rank of major, became head of a textile firm, and in 1953 was appointed Permanent Representative to NATO by President Eisenhower. Submitted to the Secretary of War on 1 September 1919, the report was Pershing's official account of his command of American forces in the First World War. It was also published in Current History, where it was described as "the most important military document on our share in the world war" (Vol. 11, No. 2, 1920, p. 338). Octavo (231 x 141 mm). With 16 coloured folding maps at the rear. Recent blue morocco, spine and front cover lettered in gilt, marbled endpapers.
