Translated from the Occitan* into French and prefaced by Jean-Bernard Mary-Lafon * Occitan is a Romance language spoken in Southern France, Monaco, Italy and Spain. It has no standard written form and is endangered by language shift and decline. Sometimes also referred to as Provençal. from the TRANSLATOR'S PREFACE Here is another diamond from the poetic crown of our fathers which, after five hundred and fifty years of dust and forgotten, shines once again in the light of day. Too careless of its literary riches, the France of today was no longer France of yesteryear had never given it a thought. We had a version, or rather a crude imitation, of the poem, in the imitation of the poem, in the manner of the story of the four Aymon sons. but this hasty and overly popular transfer onto gray paper rendered neither the meaning, nor the color, nor the energy, nor, strictly speaking of the original. Far more eager than France of going back to the sources of our Provençal poetry, as early as 1533, Germany had treated the Fierabras novel. However, this translation, which which was reprinted in 1809, reproduced the incomplete text, French manuscripts only approximately and imperfectly reflecting the admirable poem. A Castilian-language version of the poem existed in Spain in the language, from which Cervantes drew the subject of one of the most comic episodes of his novel. The Italians have another entitled Romanzo di Fierabraccia e Olivieri (Roman de Fierabras et d'Olivier); and the English have one as yet unpublished, mentioned by George Ellis in his Extraits des romans de chevalerie Translated with DeepL.…
