Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very good. First edition. Second printing. An association copy, inscribed in the year of publication on the half-title page: "For Laurance & Mary Rockefeller, with warmest regards, Peter, April 4, 1975." A great association, as Laurance Rockefeller was like Matthiessen a devoted conservationist, though he was more of an insider and major player/philanthropist. Lady Bird Johnson called him "America's leading conservationist." In particular he funded the expansion fo the Grand Teton National Park and had a hand in creating and enlarging many other parks. He served as Chairman of the Wildlife Conservation Society and founded the American Conservation Association. In 1991, he was award a Congressional Gold Medal for his conservation efforts. His overlap with Matthiessen's interests is considerable, but there is no obvious record of their collaboration; they are united by a tragedy, however, as Laurance's nephew Michael Rockefeller disappeared on the 1961 New Guinea expedition that Matthiessen participated in and chronicled in his bookUnder the Mountain Wall (1962).Meanwhile,Far Tortuga is a novel that follows nine fishermen sailing in the Cayman Island; its known for its use of dialect and its experimental flavor, and it received high praise (Kirkus, infamously hard to please, called it "a sublime work of intense human drama"). Some consider it still his best work of fiction, though he won the National Book Award much later for Shadow Country. A very good plus copy on account of sunning to board edges, otherwise fine. In a very good jacket with a little edge wear and toning, rubbing, and one bump/indentation to spine. An excellent environmental association.
