Tiny, faint smudge to front, else fine, in russet cloth with printed spine label over illustrated boards; housed in a sturdy, illustrated paper-over-boards slipcase, which shows the residue from the removal of a spine label, but that is otherwise fine. Both sets of verse fables penned by the 18th century British poet and dramatist, beautifully printed in black with red titles, and accompanied by 66 wood-engravings done by Gillian Lewis Tyler, printed in black or red. 234 pages, plus colophon. Superb.

British Bee Books No. 91a. John Gay (1685-1732) was the author (1728) of the Beggars Opera. In the Publisher's Advertisement of this 2nd Vol. it states "These fables were finished by Mr Gay and intended for the Press a short time before his death." which was 1732. The sixteen fables are all dedicated to an individual character - ie. "Fable I - To a Lawyer" "Fable XI - To a Young Nobleman" "Fable X - The Degenerate Bees" etc.

Original marbled end papers in continuous pattern to outside page edges. End papers are darkened around the edges, may be damp stains. Paper covers are a random abstract mix of red, black, cream and green ovals and circular shapes. Head of board spine is rubbed. Text block is solid although the front cover is starting. Previous owner inscription in ink on verso of FFEP, as well as pencilled comment. Title page also has pencilled notations. Some light foxing to text pages, otherwise internally clean. Deckle edge text block is only minimally tanned with rose gold gilt over head edge rubbed at the fore edge. Title and detailing is written in red and black over the cover and spine are still bright and untouched. Boards are slightly tanned around the edges with a small 1/4in notch out of the fore edge and one of the same size from the spine edge of the back cover.
