A beautifully illustrated copy of this collection of extracts from the notable work of the 'master of fox-hounds' Thomas Smith, who served as the Master of the Craven Hounds, and of the Pytchley, Northamptonshire. This is a 'New Edition' copy, with additional coloured plates and in-text illustrations, and an introduction by Lord Willoughby de Broke (Richard Greville Verney), Verney was a British peer and conservative politician who also wrote a book on foxhunting called 'Hunting the Fox', published in 1921. With a tipped in bookplate of a 'Richard Deaves Hammond' to the front free-endpaper. Collated, complete with twelve full page plates, eight of which were in colour. The coloured illustrations are from contemporary prints and paintings by such notable artists as J. F. Herring, James Pollard, and Henry Alken. The black and white illustrations are facsimile reproductions from the originals by Tom Smith in the earlier edition of this work. In the publisher's original quarter green cloth binding, with gilt-stamped title and fox motif to the front board. Externally, minor bumping to head and tail of spine. Handling marks to fore edge of front board. Tipped in bookplate to front free-endpaper. Internally firmly bound. bInding only strained to frontispiece plate, partially detached to tail of gutter, but reasonably firm. Page slightly age toned but very bright and clean, with the odd spot, heavier to first and last few pages. Very Good. book.
