Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book is an examination of Count Rumford's philanthropic bequest to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. The Academy was tasked with using the funds to award a prize for the most significant discovery on heat or light. However, the author argues the Academy has mismanaged the trust, leading to a re-evaluation of the experiments that were submitted for consideration. The author's research highlights the experiments conducted by Marcus Bull and the reasons why they were unfairly dismissed by the Academy's appointed committee. This book is a valuable resource for understanding the history of scientific patronage and the importance of proper scientific methodology. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book presents detailed findings from a series of experiments conducted by the author to determine the relative efficiency of different types of fuel, such as wood and coal, and the most effective ways of burning them for the maximum output of heat. The author describes the construction of the apparatus used in these experiments, and presents tabular data showing the weight of fuel required to maintain a constant temperature in a room of given size. The author finds that the efficiency of a fuel depends on several factors, including the method of combustion, the size and shape of the stove or grate, and the amount of air supplied to the fire. The author also explores the effects of moisture content in the fuel and the temperature of the surrounding air on the efficiency of combustion. The author's findings have implications for the design of stoves and fireplaces, and for the selection of fuel for heating purposes. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item. …

Softcover. Condition: Good. First Edition. First Edition. Octavo. Original printed wrappers, 52, [1]pp. Wrappers browned, some splitting and loss to paper spine, foxed, good. Marcus Bull (1787-1851) was a member of the American Philosophical Society who published a paper in 1826 of his experiments with wood and coal fuel made in 1823. Bull then applied for a premium from the American Academy of Sciences at Boston who were trustees of a fund endowed by Count Rumford, a prize to be awarded to the inventor of the most useful discovery of heat and light. Bull's experiments were deemed of questionable merit. Thus began this pamphlet controversy in which Bull herein defends his research and conduct. Bull reprints numerous letters between himself and Jacob Bigelow at the American Academy of Sciences. A nod from Benjamin Silliman is also included. Rumford's original letter to President John Adams is reprinted within. (For more on the controversy, see American Quarterly Review (Philadelphia 1828) IV:266-270.) *American Imprints* 32511. *Rink* 2916.…
